The Lares Trek is one of the most beautiful trails in Peru, offering gorgeous landscapes and fascinating cultural experiences for those interested in a medium to challenging hike. Here you will encounter very few other travelers as you pass through the remote Andean countryside. We will continue through the valley of Pumahuanca where we will cross the Puma pass before reaching Cuncani and ending our trek with a relaxing bath in the hot springs of Lares.
During this hike we will pass through small villages which offer a rare and fascinating insight into the traditional life of the Andes. We’ll pass gorgeous green valleys, turquoise colored lakes, flocks of llamas, alpacas and sheep, enjoy stunning views of the snow-capped mountain peaks and meet locals wearing colorful traditional clothing. We will also get an insight into the ancient agricultural customs and traditional textile weaving of the area. On the third day we will travel by bus from Lares to the town of Ollantaytambo where we will catch the train to Aguas Calientes to spend the night. Finally, we will visit the archaeological sanctuary of Machu Picchu on a full guided tour before heading back to Cusco and concluding our tour.
Today we will pick you up early at your hotel to head to the Sacred Valley, stopping for a quick breakfast at a local restaurant. Restrooms are available and you have the opportunity to buy last snacks and water etc. We will then travel by bus to the entry of the Pumahuanca Valley, a place that is famous for its crop of white corn and chicha (traditional corn beer of the Incas). Here we will meet with our horses and horsemen who will transport our belongings during the hike.
Next we will begin our trek through this gorgeous valley where native queñua trees dominate the landscape. We will follow a path with a gentle winding ascent into the valley, taking in impressive views of the surrounding mountains. We will hike for about 3 to 4 hours until we reach the archaeological site of Inca-Kancha, where we will explore the complex before enjoying our first traditional Andean lunch. You will have time to relax and rest before we continue our hike through the woods to the community of Paccha where a spectacular mountain landscape with plenty of lamas, alpacas and sheep awaits us. We will walk for another two hours, passing an abundance of small waterfalls, and finally arrive at our campsite Cuyoc at an altitude of 4.010 meters above sea level.

We will start the day early with a cup of hot coca tea and enjoy a delicious breakfast. After this we will begin our trek with a view of the snow-capped peaks of Chicón, San Juan and Verónica. Surrounded by woods, a challenging five hour adventure awaits us, climbing up a path with steep stone steps and stairs, some parts have narrow curves up to the pass of Pumahuanca at an altitude of 4.780 m. We will pass many “apachetas” at the pass, which are stone piles left by travelers crossing the pass in order to honor the apus or mountain gods. Once we reach the pass, we will also honor the mountain gods with the local custom of offering coca leaves.
From here we can enjoy a view of Moray, Maras and the nearby salt mines. Next we are ready for our descent of about one hour along a stone path with a lovely view overloooking both sides of the mountain. Finally we will reach an area close to some impressive lakes where we will have our lunch and enjoy a brief rest. After lunch we will have to walk for about two more hours downhill, and on the way we will surely meet some local farmers wearing the traditional and colorful clothing which is typical of the valley of Lares. Cuncani is the main community of the area, and we will enjoy our dinner here before setting up camp at an altitude of 3.900 m. Cuncani is very famous for its textiles which are still being woven according to ancient traditions and techniques. You will have the opportunity to buy handmade textiles directly from the people of the area.
