This trek is ideal for those who want to explore a truly off-the-beaten-track archaeological site surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. The Huchuy Qosqo trek allows you to camp in an area that is seldom seen by tourists. Huchuy Qosqo (“Little Cusco” in the Quechua language ) is situated above the Urubamba Valley and offers spectacular views over the Cordillera de Vilcanota mountain range. This trek is also a great way for you to enjoy a shorter trek that still includes Machu Picchu some real Inca trails (with Inca stairs that are even more impressive than those on the Inca Trail). You will have one night of camping in the wilderness and one night at a hotel in the town of Aguas Calientes.
Early in the morning you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the small village of Patabamba (3800m) where our team members and pack of mules are waiting. We’ll load the mules up with our gear and start our walk through the high valleys toward Pucamarca, reaching our first pass at 4200 meters above sea level (13,779ft). Along the way we’ll enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains as we pass some high Andean lakes. After lunch, we’ll continue our afternoon hike, visiting several different Inca monuments and passing some exquisite Inca stairs before reaching Huchuy Qosqo, where our team will be setting up our tents and preparing our dinner. We’ll camp overnight at the ruins before continuing our trip tomorrow.
After a guided visit of the Huchuy Qosqo archaeological complex, we will continue our hike to the small town of Chinchero, taking in some breathtaking views on the way before arriving around noon. Here we’ll visit a local home to see some traditional weaving demonstrations before lunch. Later in the afternoon, our private transport will drive us to Ollantaytambo, where we will catch the afternoon train to Aguas Calientes. Upon our arrival to Aguas Calientes, we will check into our rooms and have free time for the rest of the night.
On the third day of the tour, we will wake up early and catch the bus up to Machu Picchu, where your guide will give you a 2 hour tour of this incredible site. If you’d like to do some extra hiking within Machu Picchu, you can also climb the iconic Huayna Picchu (2,720 m/8,923 ft) with a special permit (available as an add-on to your tour). Upon returning to Aguas Calientes after our tour, you will have one last lunch before coming back to Cusco in the afternoon.
