What... read moreMy fiancé and I went into this not knowing exactly what to expect. We asked for adventure and solitude. What we got was beyond expectations. It's difficult to even start describing this experience but let's start with the nitty gritty. First off I would recommend acclimating to higher elevations for several days. We were in Cuzco for a week prior and had already done Machu Picchu. Thus we did not have issues with the altitude but still our guide, Chris, was very mindful and set a good pace. Even with the acclimatization, you will get the work out of a life time. You easily burn between 2500-3000 calories a day. We trekked about 11k feet most of the time, twice hitting peaks over 14k. Next, we carried smaller packs, about 30-40L that just had the essentials (lots of layering ) and the rest went into duffel bags that the horses carried. We rented the sleeping bags which went down to -15F or so and were perfect for the cold nights. So if you pack your own sleeping bag, making sure they go down to arctic temperatures. A tent and ground pads are provided. Wear shoes with good grips. This is no ordinary terrain and you will be scrambling down some slippery rocks. The bathrooms are "baño naturales". Ladies practice your squats and bring a reasonable amount of toilet paper. Lastly, tip your porters. Our guide gave us guidelines but once you see what they do for you it is easy to go a little above that.So onto the trek itself. "Stunning", "awe-inspiring", "a dream come true" are ways I have described it to my friends. It will not disappoint if you are looking for gorgeous scenery and a well deserved break from technology. The food was equally amazing. The cook would prepare traditional Peruvian meals from scratch that would be nearly ready for you by the time you arrived because he and the horseman basically sprinted ahead of the group to set up the tents (at night) and get lunch or dinner going. We left every meal stuffed and I would recommend an adventuresome gastronomic spirit. Our two horsemen treated their horses with respect and were just fun to be around. The second night we stayed at one of the horseman's home and it was insightful into the typical rural Peruvian life. In conclusion we felt it was worth every penny and more for this wonderful experience that we shared together. You will never see a night sky like this or watch the alpacas make their way up astoundingly steep slopes or enjoy the melding of simple ingredients after climbing several thousand feet at high altitudes like you will if you go on this trek.
