The other 4 people scheduled to depart with us had a last-minute cancellation, so we ended up having a private trek. Also, because of the allocation of the campsites among the tour groups (which I believe is pretty standard day to day, but worth asking about), we were about a half day ahead of most of the other tour companies for the first three days. So instead of facing crowded trails, we had the entire trail almost to ourselves, with just the occasional porter zooming past and only a handful of other trekkers. This gave us the time and space to take the trail at a pace that was suited to us, without having to let others pass or waiting for slower people in front of us, and made for a very intimate and meaningful experience. Alex (our guide) exhibited the patience of Job in keeping us at a careful pace that wouldn't leave us exhausted, and he was extremely knowledgeable about the trek, having completed it over 300 times. We were able to stop and ask questions whenever we wanted, or sometimes to just be still and take in the wonder and majesty of the scenes. Our porters and cook worked as hard for the two of us as they would have for an entire army, so we felt like Inca royalty making the trek. If you are looking for large groups, boisterous crowds, and lines of people, I suggest you book with one of the larger tour companies or consider vacationing in Disneyland. Otherwise, I highly recommend Cusco Native. The personal attention to working out small glitches and making this such a customized experience were exemplary. Renato patiently and quickly answered all our questions before the trip and scheduled a personal briefing with our guide upon our arrival in Cusco. I should also mention that even though I was initially leery of sending money to a foreign entity (the shared website had issues processing my credit card payment, but it seemed to have this problem with other groups as well), I finally took a chance and just paid the deposit by Paypal. The long history of solid reviews on Trip Advisor helped assure me that this was a legitimate operation, so you just have to accept the fact that the website and Peru's financial systems are a bit quirky at times.
