That’s why it’s important to read through our Inca Trail Packing List to find out what to bring when packing for your once-in-a-lifetime Inca Trail trekking experience.
What to Bring on the Inca Trail
Make sure to bring the following items to be fully prepared for your Inca Trail trek:
1. Passport
You’ll need to carry your passport for identification while on the Inca Trail. Once you arrive to Machu Picchu, you’ll also have the chance to give yourself a special stamp from the archaeological site, which makes a good souvenir.
2. Cash
Make sure to carry at least a little bit of cash in case of emergencies as well as to buy some snacks along the way if you feel inclined.
3. Clothes For All Conditions
The Inca Trail passes through several different climate zones, including cold, high altitude mountain passes and warm tropical jungle. It’s important to bring appropriate clothes for all different types of temperatures and conditions to make sure that you stay comfortable throughout the trek.
4. Good Hiking Boots
One of the most important items to pack for the Inca Trail is proper footwear for a multi-day trek. The trails can be muddy sometimes, so a good pair of durable hiking boots is an absolute must.
5. Comfortable Bedding
Most tours will include a basic sleeping bag, but if you want to be comfortable it can be a good idea to bring some of your own bedding. Suggested items include a bed mat, an extra pillow, or your own sleeping bag (if you’ve brought a good quality one on your trip).
6. Lightweight Daypack
Get a good quality and lightweight backpack so that you can carry the things you need during the day without being weighted down by a heavy full-sized bag.
7. Water Bottle
Staying hydrated while hiking is essential. Bring a long a good refillable water bottle that you can use throughout the trip and refill along the way.
8. Toiletries
Necessary items like deodorant, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, etc. will be much harder to come by while out on the Inca Trail. Make sure to pack any toiletries that you might need while out on the Inca Trail.
9. Sunscreen
Peru is quite close to the equator and as a result, UV rays can be quite intense throughout the country. High altitude makes this problem even more acute, and the sometimes-low temperatures can mean that you’re getting burned without even realizing it! Make sure you carry sunscreen and remember to apply it multiple times per day.
10. Snacks
Carry some good, healthy snacks to keep you energized while hiking. Good items to bring include nuts, dried fruits, chocolates, corn nuts, etc. If you have time, stop into the San Pedro Market in Cusco to pick up some great trail snacks.
11. Camera
The Inca Trail is a truly incredible experience, so make sure you bring a camera to capture some memories of your trek.
12. Flashlight
A flashlight or headlamp will be useful in the campsite at night and is a good idea to include in your Inca Trail packing list.
With all of the items above, you should be well-prepared for your once-in-a-lifetime Inca Trail trekking experience. We suggest reading a couple books about the Incas so that you can learn a bit about the history of this fascinating people before exploring the buildings and roads that they constructed.
